Scurrius is one of Old School RuneScape’s most accessible and rewarding mid-level bosses, offering strong combat experience rates, low mechanical punishment with OSRS gold, and consistent medium clue scroll drops. Whether you’re training melee, ranged, or magic, learning early boss mechanics, or simply looking for relaxed combat content, Scurrius is an excellent option for both solo and group play. Why Kill Scurrius? Scurrius provides competitive experience across all three combat styles. At lower to mid combat levels, players can expect anywhere from 90,000 to 130,000 XP per hour, depending on gear, prayers, and potions. Using rat-bane weaponry significantly boosts experience gains, especially when dealing with the additional rat spawns during the fight. Beyond XP, Scurrius is also a reliable source of medium clue scrolls, making it useful for progression and profit. Requirements and Location To comfortably fight Scurrius, it’s strongly recommended to have at least 43 Prayer for Protect from Melee. While not strictly mandatory, lacking protection prayers results in heavy chip damage that makes the fight inefficient and risky. You should also aim for 50–60+ in your chosen combat style if fighting solo, though lower stats are manageable in groups. Scurrius is located in the Varrock Sewers, close to the entrance. The fastest and simplest route is teleporting to Varrock and entering the manhole just northeast of the city center. From there, it’s a short walk to the boss arena. Boss Mechanics and Phases Throughout most of the encounter, Protect from Melee is your default prayer. However, Scurrius cycles through several attacks that require attention: · Magic attack: Identified by a blue projectile. Switch to Protect from Magic immediately. · Ranged attack: Identified by a green projectile. Switch to Protect from Ranged. · Rockfall attack: The most dangerous mechanic. Rocks fall onto specific tiles—move away as soon as you see the animation to avoid heavy damage. The fight consists of three phases, which are signaled when Scurrius pauses to eat cheese. · Phases one and two are identical: mostly melee attacks with occasional magic, ranged, and rockfalls. · Phase three begins when Scurrius moves to the center of the room. During this phase, he continuously uses magic and ranged attacks while rockfalls occur more frequently, demanding constant movement and prayer switching. During the fight, Scurrius periodically spawns six giant rats. These are important because players always hit their maximum damage against them, making them excellent for boosting overall XP. With rat-bane weapons, these rats can be killed extremely quickly, further increasing experience rates. Gear and Inventory Setup Your inventory should include: · Combat boosting potions · Several prayer potions · Food · A special attack weapon · A one-click teleport for emergencies For low-level melee, prioritize strength bonus items such as a fire cape, fighter torso, and dragon defender. Dragon dagger or dragon claws are solid special attack options. At mid levels, rat-bane weapons become highly effective. At high levels, the scythe is best-in-slot for melee DPS. For ranged, the minimum recommended setup is a magic shortbow. For magic, Iban’s Blast is sufficient at lower levels, while stronger Ancient Magicks setups shine later. AFK Scurrius Method Scurrius can also be killed semi-AFK using Blood Barrage with auto-retaliate and Protect from Melee. This method allows 5–10 minutes of AFK time per prayer cycle and is how many players obtain the Scurrius pet. For reliable AFKing, it’s recommended to have 90 Magic and 90 Defence. Full Virtus armor is ideal, but bloodbark armor with a blood scepter is a strong alternative due to its increased healing from Blood Barrage. With this setup, up to 38.5% of damage dealt can be returned as health. Expect rune costs of roughly 1.7 million GP per hour for sustained casting. Final Thoughts Scurrius is one of the best-designed introductory bosses in Old School RuneScape. It rewards attention to mechanics without harsh punishment with OSRS buy gold, provides excellent XP, and scales well from low to high levels. Whether you’re actively learning prayer switching or casually AFKing with Blood Barrage, Scurrius offers something valuable for nearly every account stage.
