What are Richard Mille Carbon TPT and Quartz TPT? Most Richard Mille watches are made with them!
When considering buying a Richard Mille or any other high-end watch, you've probably heard of Carbon TPT®, a groundbreaking carbon fiber technology primarily used in the production of watch cases. Carbon TPT® cases offer numerous advantages: lightweight, durable, scratch-resistant, and each piece boasts a unique carbon fiber texture. Carbon TPT® is undoubtedly RM's most recognizable case material, representing the brand's relentless pursuit of innovation. What is TPT? TPT stands for "Thin Layer Technology." This process involves cutting carbon fiber or other composite materials into ultra-thin layers, stacking them at specific angles, and finally curing them under high pressure and temperature. Among the TPT watches developed by RM, the most famous are Carbon TPT® and the vibrantly colored Quartz TPT®—the latter being a global first! In 2016, Quartz TPT® won the Innovation Award at the JEC World Composites Exhibition in France, marking not only an achievement for the watchmaking industry but also a groundbreaking advancement, gaining recognition from various industries worldwide. Comparison of Carbon TPT® and Quartz TPT® Carbon TPT®: Carbon fiber is separated into filaments, laid into ultra-thin layers, and stacked in hundreds of layers at a 45-degree angle. The components are then hot-pressed and cured, preserving the natural color of the carbon fiber. The resulting compressed carbon fiber forms random and unique patterns, giving each case a unique visual effect. RM65-01 Black Carbon Fiber TPT Quartz TPT®: Silica fibers (quartz) are separated into fine filaments and impregnated in colored resin to create unique hues. These quartz filaments are then interwoven with carbon fiber layers at a 45-degree angle, followed by heating and pressing. The final product is a brightly colored, uniquely patterned quartz TPT® case. Due to the similarity in manufacturing processes, some even refer to quartz TPT® as "colored carbon fiber TPT®". RM 65-01 Grey Quartz TPT Special Feature Pinnacle Technology: Graph TPT® Graphene is a breakthrough nanomaterial that weighs only one-sixth of steel but is 200 times stronger. It is one of the hardest materials known. When combined with Carbon TPT®, it significantly enhances the physical properties of the watch. The RM50-03 McLaren F1 watch weighs only 40 grams, combining top-tier hardness with exceptional wearing comfort, making it especially suitable for athletes during competition. Currently, only one RM watch utilizes Graph TPT® technology: the RM50-03 McLaren F1. Gold Award: Gold Carbon TPT® The production process of Gold Carbon TPT® is similar to that of Quartz TPT®. During the carbon fiber lamination process, ultra-thin gold foil is woven at a 45-degree angle between the carbon TPT® layers, followed by hot pressing and curing. The final product is the stunning Gold Carbon TPT®, characterized by its striking gold interlayers. RM12-01 Gold Carbon Fiber TPT Carbon TPT® and its innovative derivatives showcase the pinnacle of Richard Mille's collaboration with NTPT, pushing the boundaries of watchmaking craftsmanship. Owning a unique RM Carbon TPT® watch is not only a milestone for collectors but also a symbol of exceptional taste. Ready to begin your Richard Mille journey? |
